Friday Favourites: Movember

Happy Halloween!

If you want to see some Halloween images, check out my post Friday Favourites: Halloween from two Fridays ago, or the Halloween images I have available in my portfolio.  You can also visit my food blog, Crustcrumbs, for this year’s Attack of the Killer Tomatoes feature.  Last year we did a Ghostbusters-themed dessert cart including a recipe for edible ectoplasm.  (Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the Ghostbusters photoshoot.)

My agency Stocksy has also published some great Halloween posts on their blog, so if you’re looking for some last-minute inspiration before a party tonight, check out Spooky Stocksy DIY and Clever Handcrafted Costumes.

On with the ‘staches.

I know I just published a collection of photos of men, but the end of October brings the beginning of November, which means a lot of dudes I know are going to start growing moustaches to raise money for men’s health.  Welcome Movember!  Here are 30 moustache related photos in honour of the next 30 days of charity moustachery.

iPhoneography

In September, Stocksy published a blog feature called Mobile Month.  They featured 24 photographers who shoot amazing images with their mobile phones, debunking the “I can’t take pictures that nice because I don’t have as good a camera as yours!” myth.

This series has encouraged me to upload more of my “on the go” photos.  Here’s a gallery on Stocksy of my iPhoneography.

Stock Photography of Real Men

by Jen October 24, 2014
written by Jen
Stock Photography of Real Men

In February, there was a lot of buzz in the stock photo industry about needing more photos that represent “real” women.  I made a post sharing 75 authentic stock photos of women from my agency, Stocksy.  That was a really fun project to put together, and I’ve received a few requests to create a similar post about men.

Calling these posts “Stock Photography of Real Men/Women” is a bit tongue-in-cheek.  I’ve always hated campaigns that suggest certain types of people are more or less real than others (example: “real women have curves”).  “Real” shouldn’t be used as a code word to allow us to judge or exclude people in different ways.  Real people come in all shapes and sizes, and do all kinds of different things.

In stock photography, “real” to me just means genuine and authentic.  Authentic locations, actions, and expressions.  The world isn’t pretty – except when it is; and people aren’t perfectly polished – except when they are.  Lifestyle photography should represent all of these ranges.  But just as women haven’t always been portrayed authentically in stock photos, men are underrepresented in stock images as well.  Here are 75 stock photos of men available to license from Stocksy.  You can view the gallery here.

Creepy Things in My Society6 Store

Creepy Things in My Society6 Store

Like many other photographers, I sell some prints and products on Society6.

I only added a few images to my portfolio before I got distracted and stopped uploading, but because I have had a few sales this year without actively adding to my portfolio or promoting it, I decided to go back and upload some of my newer work.  I noticed that Society6 now offers a wide variety of new products for sale.

I also noticed that some of my images look a bit weird on those products.

How about a creepy lion to stare at you while you shower?

Or perhaps you would rather make eye contact with this owl while you are naked?

Society6 also sells duvet covers now.  This owl duvet cover is in a perfect position to stare right at my husband while he tries not to have nightmares.

Finally, this has been described by my cousin as “the most depressing throw pillow”:

Fun!

You can find the rest of prints and products I have for sale, creepy and otherwise, here on Society6.

Friday Favourites: Halloween!

GUESS WHAT MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY IS?

…

…

It’s Christmas.

But Halloween is a close second!

This time of year makes me giddy like a little kid getting ready to go trick or treating for the first time.  I love autumn; I love pumpkins, and gourds, and candy apples and costumes.  I don’t have nearly enough Halloween imagery in my portfolio, but last week I put a live tarantula on a model’s face:

And here is last year’s Jack o’ Lantern:

Today I would like to share some Halloween stock photos that I like.  Some creepy, some cute, some cool, some weird.  Enjoy!   You can find the whole gallery here on Stocksy.

Owl Portraits

Owl Portraits

I’ve always wanted to try photography with live animals.  Last week I had the pleasure of working with an exotic animal handler in Toronto.  My friend Nick and I teamed up on this photoshoot, as he had been wanting to shoot a model with a giant python.  I like snakes, but my personal request was for them to bring a gorgeous Eurasian eagle owl named Ruby to our shoot.

Eurasian eagle owls are one of the largest owls, and could kill a small deer.  Ruby literally took my breath away when I saw her.  Firstly, she’s huge.  Secondly, I’ve never seen an owl up close before, and it was pretty amazing.  She sat on my arm and I was able to pet her.  It was a really cool experience.

Here are some portraits I took of Ruby, as well as Ruby with a model, Camille.  The makeup artist for this shoot was the amazingly talented Nikkie Gatto.

Friday Favourites: New Stocksy Members

Stocksy’s Call to Artists is closed until 2015!  If you missed the cutoff date, I suggest reading my opinions on applying and trying again next year.  Lots of time to build up your portfolio!

It’s been fun seeing introductions from artists who live all over the world, from food photographers to nature photographers to lifestyle photographers.

I believe there were approximately 500 new members added to Stocksy in 2014.  Here are some stock photos I like from a few of our newest photographers.  They can all be found in this gallery on Stocksy.

My Favourites: Back to School

As much as I hate to admit it, it’s almost back to school time.  I miss shopping for school supplies and getting ready for another school year!  Not enough to actually do it again, but here are some of my favourite back to school images from Stocksy.

I had a really, really hard time narrowing this down so this is a huge collection.

DIY: Stamping Words onto Photos

DIY: Stamping Words onto Photos

Speaking of words in stock photos, here’s a mini-shoot I did this morning using some rubber stamps and a photograph from my trip to Hawaii last October.  Stamping is a fun way to personalize your images.

First, you need some stamps.

Craft Project: using rubber stamps to write on photographs by Jen Grantham

And a photo you want to mark up.

Print it out.  I printed 5x7s.

Oh, and you’ll also need some ink.

Figure out what you want to write and do it.  If you don’t want it to be messy, be careful.

And you’re done!
