Summer Feast with Crustcrumbs

Summer Feast with Crustcrumbs

When I was in university, I lived off-campus with friends. Thursday night was pub night at our school, and since we rarely felt like making the trek to campus, we would get together with other off-campus pals for what we called Feast. We would buy ingredients, make a dinner (usually something basic like stir-fry), drink (usually something embarrassing like Kool-Aid and vodka), and do Very Grown Up Things like play video games and make couch forts.

It was around that time my friend John Kruusi started experimenting with more complicated cooking. Slowly, our dinners evolved into more complex affairs, with John at the helm. Vodka and Kool-Aid turned into thoughtfully paired wine, and couch forts turned into jazz and conversation. Suddenly, we were Actual Adults. We were also busy, so our weekly dinners turned into every few months, and then every few years.

A couple of summers ago, John and I decided to organize a summer feast photo shoot up in Barrie, Ontario. It was a great weekend spent with friends and food, and for me, a bittersweet reminder of how much we’ve all grown up. John modelled along with our old dinner party friends Sarah and Andrew, and new friends Essa, Justine, and Liz. I did the photos, John did the food and food styling, and Justine did the prop and set styling.

Andrew recently shared a few of the photos on Instagram, and I decided to go back and finish editing the series. Click here to view the whole gallery.

Your Heart: Works in Progress

Your Heart: Works in Progress

I had another photoshoot with Your Heart on Wednesday night.  They’ve grown since I took pictures of them last September:

Your Heart - Live Band

Your Heart - Live Band

Now there are 8!  It was hard to find a time for everyone to get together, and if you live in Toronto, you may recall that it was raining for most of this week.   With Wednesday night being our only option, I had to improvise in my tiny home studio.  When I say “tiny”, I mean that it’s a 10’x10′ room that 8 people (+ a photographer) wouldn’t fit into without lighting equipment and a backdrop.

I think we were able to come up with some creative ideas to get around the space confinements.

4 hours – and 800 pictures – later, I have a lot of compositing to do!  This is a work in progress, but the end result is going to be really fun.

I wanted to post today, because Your Heart has a show tonight at Supermarket in Toronto.  They also released their new album, Autumn, and a free companion EP, Fall.   Both are amazing!  Check them out.

More pictures to come.

Your Heart: The Band

Yesterday was the Your Heart show I’ve been talking about.  It was awesome!

Before the show, the band and I took a walk around the venue and took some quick pictures.

Your Heart: Night Lights

I posted about Andrew and “Your Heart” yesterday.

Here are some pictures we took the other night for his show/album promo.  There are more pictures on Flickr.

These pictures were taken in a nearly pitch black schoolyard with a bare SB-600 flash on a stand camera right.

Your Heart

Your Heart

Andrew has been my friend for over 10 years.  He’s an extremely talented musician who has written literally hundreds (maybe even thousands) of songs.  He is also the genius behind Songs To Wear Pants To and he posted 1 song every day last year on Andrew is Music.

He’s about to release his new album, called “Summer“, under the name “Your Heart”.  I took these pictures earlier this week at the studio where he’s getting ready to film 2 kids’ music videos with his band next week.  I cannot keep track of how many bands Andrew is in or how many albums he is currently working on.  There are a lot.

He’s having a CD/Video release party on September 1st, the details of which you can find on Facebook, here.  The “Video Release” part of the party is for the song “In the Sun” from the album.  Wendelfilm created the video back in June, and I helped produce it!

Here’s a teaser:

And here are some shots from this week.
